Meet Our Board

God is in charge of human life, watching and examining us inside and out.  Love and truth form a good leader; sound leadership is founded on loving integrity.  -Proverbs 20:27-29 (The Message)

Leadership structures are important in every organization, and healthy congregations know when it is time to change a leadership structure to meet the needs of the congregation.

The United Methodist Book of Discipline offers an alternative model of governance, called the “Simplified Structure” or “Single Board Model.” This model is especially well suited for large churches, and most of the large churches in the Missouri Annual Conference have adopted this model of governance.  After discussion and discernment, Salem’s Administrative Council voted unanimously last year to move to this new model of leadership beginning January 1, 2018.

What does this mean?  It means that Salem no longer has four teams formally called Staff Parish, Finance, Trustees, and Administrative Council that make the decisions for the church.

Salem now has one team of 12 people leading the church in its mission and vision.

Why did we move to the Simplified Structure?   A simplified single board structure of governance makes it possible for Salem to better focus on leadership, equipping, and missional alignment. In other words, it puts the discussions for Salem’s ministries around one table. Teams will no longer be working in silos or going in different directions.  Less time in meetings means more time in the mission field! By consolidating administrative functions into a single board, disciples of Jesus Christ can focus on what really matters -  Reaching All People With God’s Extravagant Love!

The Salem Board consists of 12 people (sounds Biblical to me), 8 from our Salem Mid-County Site and 4 from our South-City Site, The Connection. The board serves in multiple roles and serves all the functions listed in our Book of Discipline: Finance, Staff Parish Relations, Trustees and Council.

Our Nominations Team named the 12 people serving on our Salem Board.  The board member serve in staggered three year terms.

Feel free to call Phil Cooper, our Salem Board Chair, or me if you have any questions.

God’s Blessings!
