Freedom School

In partnership with LifeWise StL and Children's Defense Fund Salem has supported the Freedom Schools Program since 2019 by offering to host a summer session at our South-City Site: The Connection and provide volunteers. Freedom School seeks to build strong, literate, and empowered children prepared to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, nation, and world today. By providing summer reading enrichment for children who might not otherwise have access to books, the program plays a much needed role in helping to curb summer learning loss and close achievement gaps. Discover how you can make a difference today in the lives of St. Louis children.

Volunteer at Freedom School: June 20-July 28

Summer Readers

Monday-Friday, 8:50-9:30am
Location: South-City Site (6701 Virginia Ave., St. Louis, MO 63111)

Do you want to help encourage children to learn?  Volunteers are invited to participate in Harambee, which means “let’s pull together,” an uplifting time filled with singing and chanting to get scholars prepared for their day. Volunteers will choose a book that is meaningful to them, read the book aloud to K-2nd grade youth, and answer questions from the scholars.

Class Instructors

Monday-Friday, Noon-2:00 pm
Location: South-City Site (6701 Virginia Ave., St. Louis, MO 63111)

During afternoon hours (12:00-2:00 pm) Freedom School is looking for volunteer instructors to come in and deliver a 45-60 minute class with K-2nd grade students about something you are passionate to share with children.  Volunteers will teach/co-teach an afternoon class (examples include but are not limited to: arts/crafts, team building games, music, knitting, tie dye T-shirts, baking, physical activity, and gardening).

Monday-Friday, 7:50-9:15 am and/or 12:15–1:15 pm
Location: LifeWise STL

Volunteers interact directly with scholars and site staff during meal times, which are an important time of socializing and nourishment for staff and scholars. This is an opportunity to support staff and interact in an informal way with scholars. We ask that all volunteers commit to a minimum of 1 shift per week. This provides consistency for scholars and staff alike as well as enables volunteers to have a greater impact on Freedom School program and interactions with scholars!
