In partnership with LifeWise StL and Children's Defense Fund Salem has supported the Freedom Schools Program since 2019 by offering to host a summer session at our South-City Site: The Connection and provide volunteers. Freedom School seeks to build strong, literate, and empowered children prepared to make a difference in themselves, their families, communities, nation, and world today. By providing summer reading enrichment for children who might not otherwise have access to books, the program plays a much needed role in helping to curb summer learning loss and close achievement gaps. Discover how you can make a difference today in the lives of St. Louis children.
Do you want to help encourage children to learn? Volunteers are need to be summer readers and afternoon activity leaders. Dates for 2023 Freedom School will be coming soon.
Summer Readers: Volunteers will choose a book that is meaningful to them, read the book aloud to K-2nd grade youth, and answer questions from the scholars.
Afternoon Activity Leaders: Volunteers will teach/co-teach a 45-60 afternoon activity with elementary students (examples include but are not limited to: arts/crafts, team building games, music, knitting, tie dye T-shirts, baking, physical activity, and gardening).
